Young David Graham is an orphan working in the same mine that claimed his father's life. Despite his situation he remains kind and faithful, even preaching to his fellow orphans at his little, makeshift church. He impresses the mine's owner John Morton and his daughter, Leila, with his upright, generous character and is given a chance to attend school and join the clergy. Now adults, Leila is still smitten with David and wants him to stay in the city, but David feels he must return to his people in the mining town.
