Timid spinster Miss Lulu Bett lives a unhappy life of drudgery working in the home of her married sister. Treated as less then a servant by her brother-in-law Dwight Deacon she leaps at the first chance to escape her miserable existence only to have things go against her. Afterwards she is forced to accept suspicion and disgrace to protect her sister's family. However she is emboldened by the kindness and attention shown her by the schoolteacher Neil Cornish.
