In the secluded mountains of the Carolinas the Darley family lives an isolated existence, making money as moonshiners. Their ward, the orphan Milly Hendricks, has a hard life tending the house and her only prospect is to marry the eldest Darley son, Lem. That is until Harvey Swope rides into their valley to inspect a parcel of land left to him by a relative. The Darleys don't like strangers, much less well-heeled city folk and are untrusting of Harvey's motives. But Milly is smitten with their polite and educated visitor, which does not go unnoticed by Lem.
