David Belasco was a wealthy and successful Broadway producer during the first decades of the 1900’s, with two theatres in New York City and several others around the country. Some of the actors that worked in his productions were Lillian Gish, Cecil B. DeMille, Mary Pickford, Barbara Stanwyck, Lionel Barrymore, and others. In 1917 his production of “Polly with a Past” was playing in Baltimore, Maryland to work out any problems before making its debut in his Broadway theater.

Ina Claire, the leading lady in the show, got a telephone call from David Belasco telling her that he was going to make her a star. He instructed her to see one of his executives as soon as the show got to New York City. He offered her a contract, and when she asked how much her salary would be, he told her to name her own number. Ina Claire was a natural actor that exuded raw sensuality in an uninhibited and exciting way.
